Testing Instructions for Students

To take the KEMTP Test:

  1. Go to our website http://www.mathclass.org/ and click on To to KEMTP.
  2. Click on Take a KEMTP Test.
  3. Fill out the testing form as follows:
    • Pull down the --Select your school-- menu to select your school.
    • Pull down the --Select Teacher-- menu to select your teacher.
    • Enter your first and last name.
    • Enter your student ID or Social security Number (optional).
    • Enter the Examination Code provided by your teacher.
  4. Click on either Retrieve the Basic Exam or Retrieve the Advanced Exam based on your teacher's instructions. The basic exam is designed for students who have completed Algebra I. The advanced exam is designed for students who have completed Algebra II.
  5. Wait until the exam is fully loaded and take the test. Click on the number (at the top of the page) of the question you want to answer. Answer the question by clicking on one of the five possible choices. When you have completed the exam, click on Go to Submit Button Page.
  6. Click on Submit and Record Results.
  7. Read the evaluation of your test results. If you want to print out the examination and the results, select Printer Friendly Questions from the pull down at the top of the page and then print the page. If you have time, you can examine each problem (click on the problem number at the top of the page) to see where mistakes were made. (The evaluation of your test results and the test you took are in your teacher's online roll book.) Exit completely from your browser when you have finished.

Online Testing Instructions for Teachers

  1. Obtain a Password. A password is assigned and sent to every high school mathematics teacher in the state. If you do not receive a password or if you forget your password, you can obtain one from the testing program through your department chair or directly through KEMTP director Steve Newman at newman@nku.edu. The password serves two purposes. The process of generating a password creates your online roll book and puts your name on the list of teachers at your school, allowing your students to get the KEMTP test graded and the results placed in your online roll book. It also allows you to access your online roll book. (See section 4 to find out how to access your online roll book.)
  2. Select an Examination Code. To administer the test, you need to select a code of up to seven characters for each of the classes you test. Please note that you can select your code without any interaction with the computer. There are two different types of codes. Codes beginning with the letter x will randomly generate a different test for each student; codes beginning with another character will generate the same test for each student in the class. For example, suppose Carol R. Brown would like to test her second period class, giving each student a different test. She might choose xcrb2 as the class code. On the other hand, she might choose crb2 if she wished to give each student the same test. It is important to have a different code for each class so that students in the same class will be grouped together in your online roll book.
  3. Administer the Test. Schedule a time in your computer lab when all students in your class can take the test together or ask each student to take the test outside of class, either in your computer lab or at home. Be sure to tell your students the Examination Code they should use. The test should take about 45 to 50 minutes to complete, but there is no time limit so your students can take extra time if you would like. Calculators, with the exception of those such as the TI-89, TI-92 and Voyager with symbolic computational capability, are allowed. An electronic calculator is helpful on a few of the test questions.
  4. Access Your Online Roll Book. To access your online roll book, go to our website http://www.mathclass.org. Click on Go to KEMTP to access the KEMTP main page, and then click on For Teachers. Pull down the --Select your school-- menu to enter your school name, and then click on Go to Log On. Under Display Student Scores, pull down the menu --Select a Teacher-- to enter your name. Enter your password, and then click on Display Scores. Select a class code (Examination Code) to see the scores of your students in that class. Click on Details opposite the name of each student to see the evaluation of that student's test results. Click on Test to see the test that student took.
  5. Practice Tests. Encourage your students to take a practice test prior to taking the KEMTP test in order to get familiar with both the content and format of the KEMTP tests. Have them click on Take a Practice Test on the KEMTP main page.

The button will return you to the KEMTP Information Page.
